The choice of fabric matters. Silk dressing gowns smooth against the skin, with a quiet kind of ease that's hard to replicate in any other cloth. Cashmere dressing gowns sit at the other end: warmer, heavier in the hand, the kind of robe you reach for when the morning is cold and you're in no hurry to get dressed. Cotton dressing gowns, brushed cotton for colder mornings, the lighter cotton batiste when you want something less substantial. For after the shower, men's bathrobes in thick terry cotton, cut generously and made to be used.
